What is a Group Discussion (GD)?

In a layman term,

G.D. means --- generally, participants of same age levels, similar educational qualifications, experiences and social backgrounds are grouped together and asked to discuss a subject without hiding anything or free from any limitations.

In a common man term,

Group Discussions are being effectively utilized as a mirror to reflect

* Social

* Cultural

* Educational and

* Psychological background of a candidate.

In an expert term,

Group Discussion means

* A Football game or

* A Hockey game, where you play like a teampassing the ball to each team member and aim for a common goal.

In my opinion,

Group Discussion is a systematic, structured and purposeful oral process whereby participants sitting generally F2F are supposed to share, exchange, transfer, distribute and above all understand views, ideas, thoughts and feelings through oral communications on certain topic/issues/problems which in turn results in effective communication, awareness and humbleness etc.

Why Group Discussion?

Let us understand this through one example – you have 5 friends and now you are planning to go for a movie in your city. Now discussion starts and you might have observed that it is very difficult to come to a conclusion

1. Which movies to watch?

2. Which place to go?

3. How to reach there?

4. How to persuade your friends?

5. How to encourage?

6. Who will book the ticket in advance or on the spot?

7. How to pick your friends from different places

All these things mentioned above involves certain personality traits which will become clear through “Group Discussion” because in your group only one person will take the decision and rest friend will follow him. That is why; there are three aspects of Group Discussion:

Why of GD?

A. Job Aspects

The reasons are:

1. If you want your selection in ANY B-schools like IIM’s, XLRI, FMS, MDI, JBIMS, SPJIMR etc.

2.If you want to work with ANY MNC’s like INFOSYS, SATYAM, WIPRO, INTEL, TCS, MICROSOFT, ORACLE etc.

3. If you want to work in DOMESTIC MNC’s like IOC, ONGC, SAIL, BHEL, IPCL, and HPCL etc.

4. If you want to work with RBI, WHO, WORLD BANK, IMF etc.

B. Personality Aspects

1. It helps you to comprehend a subject more acutely.

2. It improves your ability to think critically.

3. It helps in solving a certain issues/problem.

4. It helps the group/team to make a certain decision.

5. It gives you the chance to hear other students' ideas.

6. It improves your active listening skills.

7. It boosts your confidence in speaking.

8. It can change your perception & attitudes.

C. Competencies Aspects

1. To check your “Aptitude

Aptitude means “JACK OF ALL TRADES” i.e. like a General Physician in the Hospital. In other words, how much you are comfortable with SPELT technique. Under “Aptitude” you are supposed to apply your

* Numerical Ability

* Analytical and

* Logical Reasoning.

2. To check your “Abilities”

Abilities means like a “SPECIALIST” e.g. Child Specialist or Gynecologist.

Under this, you are supposed to apply your

* Decision Making – Choose the best option

* Problem Solving – To arrive at different solutions

3. To check your “Skills”

*Organizational Skills

*Interpersonal Skills

*Presentation Skills

*Communication Skills

*Leadership Skills

Strength of GD

It means, what we do in a G.D.

The strength of a group discussion lies in

* Extracting

* Channelizing

* Merging diverse ideas to reach a more meaningful and rational decision.

Structure of GD

A. Administrative Details

Participant Size:          6 – 20

Allocated Time:          10 – 30

Arrangement for Seating:

a. Circular

b. U – Shape

c. Rectangular

d. Fish Bowl

B. Phases Of GD

Initiation / Introduction

Definition

Explanation (or body of GD)

Conclusion

Form of Group Discussion

Closed GD or Structured GD

Maximum 10 participants/team.

You will be given a general topic to discuss.

Each participant will get max.2 minutes to express him/her.

No consensus expected at the end.

No leader is to be selected for facilitating the process.

This is for more “Selection”.

Open or Unstructured GD

Maximum 20/30 participants/team / Time Limit: 20 minutes.

You will be given any topic on GSPELT (General, Social, Political, Economical, Legal and Technological etc.) to discuss.

No fixed timings for any participant.

Consensus mandatory at the end.

Leader is to be selected for facilitating the process.

This is for heavy “Rejection”.

Things are sometimes made more complicated by asking the group to propose a topic, discuss it and reach a consensus.

Case based GD or Role Play or Specialized GD

The candidates are given a real life cases for example – How will you bring Mount Everest in India? And now through “Role Play” act on that assuming that all “National” heads are participating in the discussion like Mr. Modi, Mr. Obama, Mr. Nawaz Sharif, and Mr. President from China etc. OR,

They may discuss – Components of Food and they can act “Role Play” like all seven components of Food like Carbohydrates, Proteins, Vitamins, Fibers, Minerals, Fat and Water etc.

Type s of GD

1. Topic Based

A. Knowledge Based (Domain)

E.g. GSPELT Topics (Black Money)

B. Non – Knowledge Based (Non – Domain)

1.1. Concrete Topics

E.g. Girls are better than boys / Love marriages are better than Arrange marriage

1.2. Abstract Topics

E.g. 2+2 = 5 / Love is a FOUR letter word.

 2. Case Based

Exploratory

Critical

Etiquette of GD

Do

* Speak pleasantly and politely to the group.

* Respect the contribution of every speaker.

* Try to stick to the discussion topic. Don't introduce irrelevant information.

* Be aware of your body language when you are speaking.

* Agree with and acknowledge what you find interesting.

Don't

* Lose your temper. A discussion is not an argument.

* Shout. Use a moderate tone and medium pitch.

* Use too many gestures when you speak. Gestures like finger pointing and table thumping can appear aggressive.

*Dominate the discussion. Confident speakers should allow quieter students a chance to contribute.

*Draw too much on personal experience or anecdote. Although some facilitator encourages students to reflect on their own experience, remember not to generalize too much.

Tips for participation in a GD

Taking a Position

Always take a complete view of the topic

Avoid statements like:

 “I totally support the topic”

“I fully disagree with the topic”

Start as, “there are points in favor of and against the topic…..”

If your voice is soft

Just raise the voice level but do not shout

Wait for moments when the noise levels will be slightly lower and get into the discussion

If someone interrupts you while discussion

Raise your voice level slightly and you can say

Excuse me, please let me complete

Just a minute-let me finish my point

How to enter the Discussion

First of all identify strong speakers in the group

Concentrate and be attentive

Whenever someone gives you SPARK of your point just enter to the discussion comfortably by saying “Yes, what you say is almost correct and true…..”

“….but there is something more that we should must add & look at…”

“…and there is another reason to support what you say…”

If you are not being noticed while speaking

It may be due to your

Soft Voice

Low Voice

Any aggressive speaker is saying something

Then wait for

A soft – voiced person

Agree what he or she says and continue

If you know nothing about the Topic

Do not start the discussion

Concentrate on other views and jot down the main points

Reshape the points

If someone ideas are similar to your ideas

Say like this:

“Yes, you are absolutely right.”

“I am in toto with you.”

If you know the topic very well but others are totally ignorant

Do not put all the points in the very beginning

Go step by step in extending the points

Difference between GD/Debate/JAM/Extempore/Impromptu

Group Discussion – means discussion without going in favour and against any topic which is not an ARGUMENT at all, and finally coming to a CONCLUSION.

Debate – means discussion in favour and against the topic which is purely an ARGUMENT without any CONCLUSION.

JAM – just a minute: to check one’s ability within a minute with conceptual clarity; this requires preparation which is PLANNED & FORMAL.

Extempore/Impromptu – you are supposed to speak on any topic without any preparation which is UNPLANNED & INFORMAL. This is neither a discussion nor an argument.

Rules for GD – FAQ’s

** For Closed GD – every participant is supposed to speak for min. 30 seconds & max. 2 minutes (before starting all participants should get 5 minutes for Brainstorming on the given topic – Max. 10 participants at a time).

** For Open GD – all participants are supposed to say at least one sentence within 3 minutes; if it does not happen and only one person is keep on speaking (as it happens in 80% cases) then the entire GD session will be NULL & VOID and everybody will be REJECTED because it is responsibility of the INITIATOR to ENCOURAGE other members in the discussion; it means he or she does not have TEAM LEADERSHIP quality. At this stage, facilitator is supposed to call next team for discussion (max. 20 participants in a team).

** In Closed/Open/Case based GD – no one will address by his or her name; only Candidate No. 1 & Candidate No. 2 and so on ……

** In Closed/Open/Case based GD – no participant will GREET panel member at any cost; extend your greetings among participants only. If possible, ignore all panel members while GD is in progress; you must avoid even looking at the panel members.

** In case of JAM/Extempore/Impromptu – judgement should be based on CONTENT discussed with complete AWARENESS not on the basis of COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

** For all form & types of GD – divide the class into TEAM for easy SELECTION.

** As a general rule, GD should not exceed more than 30 minutes per team.

** There must be at least 4-5 panel members to evaluate so that GD should be conducted UNBIASED and free from all pre-assumed NOTIONS.

** As a rule, panel member must give at least 3 minutes for preparation in case of only Closed GD and Open GD because you are supposed to speak for more time. But in case of JAM/Extempore/Impromptu – no need of any preparation because it is fully spontaneous which does not require any preparation which lasts for less than a minute.

** The candidate who will start the GD i.e. INITIATOR will only address the entire TEAM by saying – Good Morning/Good Afternoon/Good Evening - Friends OR, Good Morning/Good Afternoon/Good Evening – one and all etc.

** As a rule, INITIATOR is supposed to INTRODUCE and DEFINE the topic given without going in favour or against (general introduction and definition) within a minute and pass on to other participants for discussion and if possible he or she is supposed to LEAD the discussion (generally LEADERS are chosen on the basis of one’s performance in the discussion by the participants itself which takes place automatically) and CONCLUDE the discussion keeping in mind time allotted (but in any case you are not supposed to look at your watch FREQUENTLY – Time alertness is required).

** As a rule, you are allowed to carry a NOTE BOOK for noting down some points only in case of Closed and Open GD and CASE BASED GD but not in case of JAM / EXTEMPORE/IMPROMPTU etc.

** As earlier told, GD is a discussion not an argument; you may take NEUTRAL (both sides – both in favour and against) view of any topic given for discussion in a systematic and logical way.

** As a rule, if you do not know the meaning of the topic, do not ask the panel member; just wait for other participants to start whosoever FAMILIAR with the topic only then JUMP into discussion.

** As a rule, panel member will cut the marks of all those participants who are TOO AGGRESSIVE and RUDE, TALKING TERROR, SILENT, using ABBREVIATIONS (without clear meaning), TECHNICAL TERMS and SLANG/ COLLOQUIAL/ JARGONS etc.

** As a rule, every participant must try to extend their viewpoints at least 3 to 4 times.

** As a rule, panel member can stop GD at any point of time if they find that GD is too noisy, meaningless discussion, irrelevant discussion and above all so called MODERATOR or INITIATOR is BIASED towards self or others or someone etc.

What and Why of Group Exercise?

Group Exercise is mainly an "Indoor" Activity/Exercise/Game may be in the form and type of any Topic/Issues; may be a Management Case Study to solve; may be an Ethical Case Study to solve; may be an Essay Writing; may be some Creative or Out of box Thinking topic/issues etc (Duration: 30 minutes; No. of participants: 10-15). In Group Exercise, candidates are being provided a few chart papers, sketch pens, and other stationery items. Candidates are supposed to gather around a long table and asked to come out with solution.

Type - A1: Generating New Ideas?

Generating New Ideas force you to think in terms of Benefits & Limitations i.e. Advantages & Disadvantages out of any situations etc.

Topic – 1: If we could fly?

Advantages

1. Transportation problem will be solved.

2. Running cost of big undertakings like Indian Railways, Air Lines and Transport Corporation will drastically come down.

4. Open compound and rooftops quite unsafe.

5. International borders will face threats from aliens.

6. Defence forces will have tough time to maintain unity and integrity of the country.

Topic – 2: World without Mountains?

Disadvantage

1. All mighty rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra and Sutlej and similar big rivers in other countries will disappear.

2. The valleys of such rivers which are among the most fertile areas in the world will be turned into deserts.

3. The forest wealth will vanish.

4. The various types of trees which thrive at different levels of the hilly areas will disappear.

5. Millions of species like birds, animals and reptiles, which flourish at different heights will also become extinct.

6. All types of raw materials which we get from forest will disappear e.g. timber, furniture and boats etc.

7. Lacs of people who are getting employment from forests will be jobless.

8. Due to absence of timber and furniture – housing problem will arise.

9. Shortage of fuel wood will create problem for cooking energy.

10. Cattle and ship will die due to shortage of forests land.

11. Above all – no monsoons or no rains.

Advantage

1. We will be able to cross any border very easily as per our choice.

2. More exposure and learning due to easy passage to other countries without any visas and passport.

10. Every year we will be able to conduct “ICE” marathon like other cold countries.

Topic – 3: World with an Additional Eye?

Advantage

If we have additional eyes on the back of the head then

1. No students can make funny faces even once the back of the teacher.

2. No junior will be able to imitate his seniors either in office / college / schools.

3. Daughter-in-law making fun of their mother-in-law will become things of the past.

4. Even at home – imitating one’s relatives behind them will automatically stop.

5. Above all – all back biting will automatically stop.

Disadvantage

1. We will not be able to sleep properly.

2. During sleeping hours – additional eyes should be shut or closed.

3. People will not be able to sport fancy hairstyles because eye would have to remain uncovered all the time.

4. We will not be able to use Turbans, Caps or any other things on our head so that additional eye is always visible.

5. Eye infections will multiply.

6. Goggles and Spectacles will have to be especially designed – “a trio of spectacles” or “a trio of glasses” instead of “a pair of glasses”.

Topic – 4: World without Teachers?

We even cannot think of teachers whereby we know very well teacher is who help in building the nation. We have very old tradition of GURU – SHISHYA PARAMPARA which we will lose. This is just beyond our imagination but if such a situation comes to pass, the following bad results are likely to arise:

Advantages

1. No teacher’s means no schools, so students will not go to schools rather they will enjoy at home.

2. Students will have no homework so whole day they can enjoy their life.

3. Students will have more freedom and space.

4. As no teachers, no schools and no exam also.

Disadvantage

1. We will lose the tradition of great teaching by our great teachers from WEST like Plato, Socrates and Aristotle and at the same time from EAST also like Vishwamitra, Vashist and Dronacharya etc.

2. Future generations will not be able to receive such great teachings and even will not be able to relate what they taught and how they guided the entire civilizations and left their impression for time immemorial.

3. Without teachers, we will not be able to shape our personality and character.

4. Teachers teaches and control our behavior which will not be possible then we will have no control on our behavior after that there will be complete chaos.

5. Without teachers, parents will have very tough time to control child at home the whole day without any GOAL.

6. Without any aim & ambition we will go back to Stone Age.

Topic – 5: Reading the Minds of Others

Advantages

1. At home, when we will be able to read mind of our parents then we will be able to fulfill their expectations.

2. In schools, by reading our teachers mind, we will be able to fulfill their expectations.

3. Among friends, we will be able to find out their expectations also.

4. There will be excellent co-ordination and co-operation between Husband & Wife by reading each other’s mind in terms of sacrifices and commitment etc.

5. All suicide and killings will be stopped among teenagers when they will be able to read mind of their beloved in advance so that there will be no confusion.

6. False Love will stop because nobody can play with anybody’s emotions.

7. Wrong intentions will not get any space and freedom. Above all

8. Our Government of India will come to know that what people want from them so that they are supposed to act accordingly.

9. All politicians FALSE PROMISES towards PUBLIC will be stopped.

Disadvantages

1. There will be strife and conflicts among Diplomats across the globe who are the biggest liars and smooth operators.

2. You cannot even think of cursing your parents whatsoever may be the reasons.

3. You cannot even think of cursing your teachers.

4. You cannot even think of cursing your friends.

5. You cannot even think of cursing your girlfriend.

6. No politicians can curse other politicians at least in front of them.

7. Politicians cannot make false promises.

Type – A2: Creative Thinking?

Creative Topics force you to think ‘Beyond Boundaries’ or ‘Out of Box thinking’ which will be based on ‘Facts’.

Topic – 1: A ship docked in a harbor cannot face the storms?

The meaning is very simple – if a ship (life) docked (staying) in a harbor (home) can never face storm (difficulties) i.e. in other word, a person can never have the taste of success without failure in one’s life. One very old and beautiful maxim - if a person standing near the sea and just dreaming about getting “Pearls” without jumping into the sea; impossible. There is no BLACK MAGIC for all this. We have to come out of our home and must face storm (problems, difficulties and obstacles) in our life only then we will get success. In this world, all inventions, innovations and discoveries sets the example how the inventor, innovators and discovers came out of their comfort zone and contributed a lot to this world. Recent example of “Mangalyan” by our scientist is the best example of facing storms for several years but finally they got success. All big persons of this world have faced storms in one’s life and they become successful. We have very nice examples of Mr. Modi, Mr. APJ Abdul Kala, Mr. Tata and Mr. Ambani etc. "Life is not a bed of roses" - almost all Noble Prize winners from India is the best example of this proverb be it Mr. Rabindra Nath Tagore, Ms. Mother Teresa, Mr. Hargovind Khurana, Mr. C.V. Raman, Mr. Ramakrishnan, Mr. Venugopal, Mr. Amartya Sen, Mr. S. Chandrasekhar and finally Mr. Kailash Satyarthi etc. So, try to know your shortcomings, be bold and courageous and you should not have any FEAR factor in your mind because FEAR says – Face Everything and Rise!!!

Topic – 2: Every Cloud has silver lining?

The meaning is very simple - clouds means difficult stages or phases of our life and silver lining are rays of hopes. As it is truly said – every problem has solutions just like every lock has keys. As we know very well that there are only two meanings of FEAR – either Forget Everything and Run or Face Everything and Rise!! Now it is up to you which meaning suits you and accordingly go ahead because sky has no limit and IMPOSSIBLE says – I am possible. Be positive in attitude and perception only then you will fill the importance of LIGHT after Darkness. We should keep on trying because PRACTICE MAKES A PERSON PERFECT. According to Swami Vivekananda, if you welcome happiness and pleasure then you should also welcome obstacles and grief as both go side by side.

Topic – 3: Let sleeping dogs lie?

As per one source available on GOOGLE, the meaning of this proverb is 'avoiding interfering in a situation that is currently causing no problems but may well do so as a result of such interference '. This is very true in most of the cases. In Hindi we call it – AA BULL MUJHE MAR (when we invite a bull to hit us). We might have observed in recent elections that how Mr. Kejriwal challenged Mr. Modi in Varanasi without any personal background of his own (Mr. Kejriwal). One more example - Just few days back when after the death of our Colonel rank officer; Mr. Jelani, a leader from J&K when he commented that the terrorist who got shot by our SHAHID COLONEL is also SHAHID for J&K people (he invited troubles for him and for this comment he will have to face JAIL also). In Delhi, Mr. Kejriwal is inviting or provoking on daily basis BULL (i.e. our Election Commission) to take certain action against him for his derogatory comment on other leaders. We might have observed in most of the Institutions & Organization; once you ask for your increment & promotion, in return your boss will ask you to give him in writing your PERFORMANCE over the years though they had clearly mentioned at the time of joining that APPRAISAL will be done every year. Another example at most of the offices – if you are late and your boss did not tell you anything, please leave the matter here only, if by mistake you approach him and say sorry then you will be in trouble. In fine we can say that do not provoke any old conflicts or argument; when dog is sleeping, let him sleep, never ever try to awaken him all of a sudden otherwise he will bite you due to disturbance in his NAP or due to some other reasons also.

Topic – 4: Is God male or female?

As per sources and resources whatever available on this earth and whatever we have taken from our ‘Vedas’ and epics like ‘Ramayana’ & ‘Mahabharata’ it is believed that as per Hindu mythology (Bhagavad-Gita) - God is ‘Male’ because they extended shape, form and type to this universe: BRAHMA – creator of this universe (living and non-living things); VISHNU – bringing up of all living and non – living things; MAHESH – maintaining all rules and regulations along with full right to ‘Punish” all living & non – living things. As per great ‘Bible’ – PARMESHWER PITA (heavenly father of Jesus – Almighty) firstly created ADAM and then from ADAM ribs, he created EVE. If we believe this then GOD IS MALE. But question here comes who wrote all this, naturally not by at all any GOD; everything has been written by HUMAN BEINGS on the basis of knowledge, information and exposure available to them at that time whatever they presumed. In reality, GOD is neither male nor female – GOD means faith, trust, hope, happiness, belief, pleasure, miseries, sorrows, grief etc. once told by Einstein, we can measure LIGHT but not DARKNESS it means LIGHT is GOD whom we can see, feel, touch, smell, taste and hear everywhere as it is rightly said – GOD IS OMNIPRESENT!!!!!

Topic – 5: Men are from mars and Women are from Venus?

As per astrology, Mars and Venus is both ‘Planets’ and has got great significance and influence on human’s life. Mars being red in color and as we know RED shows aggressiveness, bravery, fight, anger, fiery and rough etc. Venus as the name suggest itself ROMAN GODDESS which symbolizes cool & calm, beauty & grace, emotional and sentimental and finally love and affection etc. In today’s world this meaning is partially true because there are women who have all the quality of MARS and vice – versa. The best examples from India – Ms. Kiran Bedi, Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Ms. Smiriti Irani, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, Ms. Indira Gandhi, Ms. Shakuntala Devi, Ms. Kalpana Chawla, Ms. Sheila Dixit, Ms. Sania Mirza and above all our loving Mother Teresa and Lata Didi  etc. As we know very well that FIVE FINGERS in our hand is not equal and at the same time FIVE siblings (sisters and brothers) borne from the SAME PARENTS are not equal in destiny and intelligence, on the same way, there is MONOPOLY that MARS cannot acquire the qualities of VENUS and vice – versa.

Type - A3: What and Why of Abstract Thinking?

Abstract Topic forces you to think ‘Facts’ with ‘Multiple Thinking’. For Example – Black Cat is considered ‘Lucky’ in Japan but not in all countries.

Topic – 1: G 8?

G-8 means group of ‘8’ highly developed countries of the world. In other words we can say these countries are ‘super’ power of the world among 210 countries. They are – USA, UK, RUSSIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, FRANCE, ITALY and CANADA. After 2000, CHINA & INDIA comes at the 9th and 10th position. Topic – 2: BRICS vs. PIGS?

BRICS – is the abbreviation for BRAZIL, RUSSIA, INDIA, CHINA and SOUTH AFRICA. All these countries are now emerging super power of the world. As per one estimate 80% world population falls under these countries total together and their economy is also growing not less than @10% per annum and combined together exceeds all developed countries. The economic potential of BrazilRussiaIndiaChina and South Africa is such that they could become among the five most dominant economies by the year 2050. The thesis was proposed by Jim O'Neill, global economist at Goldman Sachs. These countries encompass over 25% of the world's land coverage and 40% of the world's population and hold a combined GDP (PPP) of $20 trillion. On almost every scale, they would be the largest entity on the global stage.

PIGS - is an acronym used in economics and finance. Originating in the 1990s, the derogatory term usually refers to the economies of PortugalItalyGreece and Spain, four very different economies in southern Europe. The term became popularized during the European sovereign-debt crisis of the late 2000s and expanded in use during this period. The term is widely considered derogatory and its use was curbed during the period of the European crisis by the Financial Times and Barclays Capital in 2010.

What and Why of Group Task?

Group Task may be either an "Indoor" or an "Outdoor" Activity/Exercise/Game (for Admission Interview) but it is always "Outdoor" in case of NDA/CDS selection.

It may be in the form and type of any Topic/Issues; may be a Management Case Study to solve; may be an Ethical Case Study to solve; may be an Essay Writing; may be some Creative or Out of box Thinking topic/issues etc. (Duration: 30 minutes; No. of participants: 10- 20).

Topic – 1: Leadership Case - Famous vs. Non-famous

There are 8 people flying from India to USA – Doctor, Engineer, Priest, Monk, Leader, Businessman, Actor and Child whose age is only 5 years. After 8 hours of Journey, Pilot noticed that there is some problem with the airplane. The pilot informed the problem and suggested after diagnosis that airplane could be saved only when - One person should be thrown out of the airplane. Now discussion started among all those 7 people because child cannot participate in the discussion due to his/her age factor.

As a Business Manager you are supposed to take the decision that whom should be thrown out and why and why not others?

Terms & Conditions:

You cannot throw Pilot.

There is no parachute.

All the 7 people are having very good Name & Fame

You cannot throw luggage.

You cannot throw Co-pilot.

You cannot repair.

Smart Answer

This is a business world case study and we know very well that business world works on 100% ‘Profitability’ not on ‘Probability’ (chances of getting profit 50:50). The correct answer is “Child” because as a business manager you have to consider ‘Profit’ from every product. Just take example of Tata Group to understand this case clearly:

Tomco – Like a child (got closed due to loss after almost 10 years)

Telco – Like Doctor

Tisco – Like Engineer

Tata Nano – Like an Actor

Tata Salt – Like a Businessman

Tata Tea – Like a Monk

TCS – Like a Leader

Taj Hotel – Like a Priest

Briefly give your reasons after reading that who are most offensive and who are least objectionable. Give first Individual ranking then Team Ranking.

There once lived a woman named Rekha who was in love with a man named Amitabh Amitabh lived on the shore of a river. Rekha lived on the opposite shore of the same river. The river that separated the two lovers was teeming with hungry alligators.

Rekha wanted to cross the river to be with Amitabh. Unfortunately, a heavy flood had washed out the bridge the previous week. So, she went to ask Shakti a riverboat captain, to take her cross. He said he would be glad if she would consent to go to bed with him prior to the voyage. She promptly refused and went to a friend named Amar to explain her plight. Amar did not want to get involved at all in the situation. Rekha felt her only alternative was to accept Shakti terms. Shakti fulfilled his promise to Rekha and delivered her into the arms of Amitabh. When Rekha told Amitabh about her amorous escapade in order to cross the river. Amitabh cast her aside with disdain. Heartsick and rejected, Rekha turned to Sashi with her tale of woe. Sashi, feeling compassion for Rekha, sought out Amitabh and beat him brutally. Rekha was overjoyed at the sight of Amitabh getting his due. As the sun set on the horizon, people heard Rekha laughing at Amitabh.

What and Why of Group Discussion?

Group Discussion is mainly an "Indoor" healthy "Discussion" and "Conversations" between 10 to 20 members as a Group; GD is NOT a Debate. GD may be in the form and type of any Topic/Issues; may be a Management Case Study to solve; may be an Ethical Case Study to solve; Some Creative or Out of box Thinking topic/issues etc. (Duration: 30 minutes; No. of participants: 10-20)

Topic – 1: Cricket vs. National Game?

It will be utmost surprise and shock for every Indian that from 1928 to 1956 (for 28 years) the Indian Hockey men's team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, garnering six gold medals in a row and once again winner in 1975 despite that we lost charm for our National Game since 1980 when we started losing medals in Olympic Game. I do not think in Cricket we are winner for continuously for 28 years (hardly 4 times we are winner in cricket). It is as of now quite unfortunate that we are planning to shift our National Game from Hockey to Cricket. It is just like that when our PARENTS are retired without any SAVINGS & INVESTMENT then discarding them because they have now no USE. The same way it is happening in Indian Army also whenever any personnel is getting injured they are out of Army because they are considered NOT FIT for concerned service. What is the meaning of this? It means till then you are capable enough to provide your services you are in; otherwise out of service – i.e. USE & THROW. How long this MENTALITY will continue? If our mentality will continue like this then it might possible that when Cricket will lose its charm (already started losing charm due to dirty politics, corruption, match fixing and favoritism etc) then we will go for Football as our National Game and so on.

To conclude, I strongly recommend that Cricket should never be our National Game rather give 100% wholeheartedly support to Hockey and once again REVIVE it as we are taking care of our PARENTS after retirement.

Topic – 2: Women better known for Multi – Thinking?

The statement is very true in all respect because the very first name coming to my mind with respect to ‘Multi – Thinking’ is my ‘Mother’ at home and in other home also who are best ‘Manager-cum-Leader’. Mother at every home is not only performing ‘Multi-Thinking’ but also ‘Multi – Tasking’. The very simple example which I would like to quote is worth mentioning:

1. Time Management – Mother at every home and office is known for excellent time management from 5AM to 11PM. During these 18 hours of busy schedule she is able to conduct or manage several multi-task and multi-thinking at home as well as at office.

2. Team Building – She promotes ‘Team Building’ at home as well as office.

3. Leadership Skills – She takes several decisions at home without any consent of her husband and at the same time even in office she is able to manage certain decisions.

4. Emotional Intelligence (EI) – Her EI is excellent that is why it is said that – ‘if mother is literate, entire family is literate’.

5. Negotiation Skills – She is perfect at negotiating the things at home and offices.

6. Conflict Management – She is excellent at managing ‘Conflict’ both at home and offices. Above all

7. Inspiration & Motivation – She is the best source for inspiration & motivation through her love and affection etc.

Topic – 3: Athletics vs. Cricket

This debate is going on for last two decades that why at the cost of cricket we are ignoring our ‘Athletics’ which is more healthy game with ethics than ‘Cricket’ which is fully time consuming and simply wasting our long time and making us “Idle.’ We will be surprised to know that Athletics news comes to the Page 3 and Cricket news comes to every page including Page 1 in ‘Bold’ with “Highlights”. The obvious reasons for this type of difference are worth mentioning:

Athletics

1. In India, if we lose any game for continuously for 10 years or more then we lose interest and we stop playing & ignoring it. This happened firstly with our National Game ‘Hockey’ whereby we were ‘Champions’ for “27 years” but after that we lost matches for next 20 years due to which we lost interest in that and Cricket became the next National Game of India.

2. Government of India is not paying any attention to Athletics due to poor vision they have because our ‘Sports’ Minister has never played any game in his or her life due to which they do not know the value and importance of Athletics which promotes ‘Health’ and ‘Ethics’.

3. In Athletics, ‘Big’ money is not involved that is why ‘NO’ big commission and big betting for our ‘Politicians’ and their ‘Agents’.

4. We have excellent talent in country but we have no vision to tap talents and promote them.

5. Athletics lost interest due to ‘NO’ future after retirement because still in Athletics ‘Big’ sponsors are not there and not even Government of India is interested in paying big money to our players.

 Cricket

1.Cricket is the second National Game of India after Hockey whereby ‘Big’ money is involved due to which Cricket players are getting ‘Crores’ and our Politicians are also getting huge sum of money from matches which is beyond our understanding.

2. The popularity of Cricket is due to their ‘Sponsors’ who are betting for ‘big’ sum for Cricket players whereby they are purchasing them like ‘Vegetables’ in the sports market through ‘Auction’ in crores.

3. As Cricket is very popular in India; all concerned with the cricket are also getting ‘Additional’ sum of money through ‘Match & Catch’ fixing.

4. Though Cricket never promote Health (due to long hours of playing which makes people idle) and Ethics (big and illegal money) though this game is very popular because NOT a single player is playing for ‘Country’.

5. We know that ‘Future’ is safe after retirement in Cricket; that is why this game is popular as of now.

To conclude, those days are not very far when we will replace our Cricket with some other game because we are losing complete ‘Series’ outside India, several match & catch fixing cases; people has started losing their interest and might possible if they will start losing their interest in matches for next 10 years or more; like Hockey we will stop playing it and replace with Football & Baseball etc. The need of the hour is we should give EQUAL importance to all GAME specially our NATIONAL GAME.

Topic – 4: Old vs. New Order

The meaning is very simple – change is the unavoidable law of nature and nothing is permanent. The order of command changes from Great Grandfather to Grandfather and Grandfather to Father and finally it comes to us (Mother-in-Law to Sister-in-Law and so on) with the passage of time. The differences between Old vs. New Order are worth mentioning:

Old Oder – Joint Family System

1. Under the old order we are either dependent or independent or interdependent.

2. Under the old order we are always safe & secure – socially & economically etc.

3. Under the old order we are not a decision maker and problem solver.

4. Under the old order we do not have our own choices.

5. Under the older order we do not have much freedom and space.

6. Under the old order we do not have any tension of future.

Old Oder – Nuclear Family System

1. Under the new order we are either independent or interdependent.

2. Under the new order we are not safe & secure – socially & economically etc. (50:50)

3. Under the new order we are a decision maker and problem solver.

4. Under the new order we have our own choices.

5. Under the new order we have much freedom and space.

6. Under the new order we have tension of future.

To conclude, we blame our Old Order people for their conservative decision but when it comes to us after a certain period we also take the same decision and keeps on going like Mother-in-law to Sister-in-law and vice – versa. It has been said that the only thing constant in life is CHANGE and we must accept this with grace and gratitude.

Topic – 5: Quantity vs. Quality

The meaning of this word is very clear – should we give more importance to quantity or quality. Almost 80% people of this country talk about QUALITY but they failed to do so. Let me explain with the help of an example:

Leaders – In India only 1% are quality leaders.

Actors – In India only 1% are quality actors.

Teachers – In India only 10% are quality teachers.

Cricket Player – In India only 1% are quality players.

Singers – In India only 1% are quality singers.

Musicians – In India only 1% are quality musicians.

Painters – In India only 1% are quality painters.

Writers – In India only 1% are quality writers.

Scientist – In India only 10% are quality scientist.

Entrepreneurs – In India only 10% are quality entrepreneurs.

Social Reformers - In India only 1% are quality social reformers.

Career – In India only 5% is getting good career.

Job – In India, almost 95% is doing job (Quantity).

Export – In India, our export quality is only 20% as per international standards.

Living – In India only 10% people are getting quality living.

Population – In India we are almost 125 crores (quantity – out of this only 20% population is getting quality in every respect i.e. food, cloth & shelter etc)

Education – Only 20% quality as per international standards and so on.

To conclude, what matters the most is QUALITY because QUANTITY i.e. more in numbers has NO USE, say for an example – one student is getting 90% marks in final year MBA and he is not able to get a good career then what is the advantage of getting this much of marks?

Topic – 6: 10 Billion vs. Olympic Game?

It will be surprise factor for every Indian that the most popular game in the world is FOOTBALL and HOCKEY (almost played by more than 150 countries) and we Indians are playing CRICKET (played by only 15 to 20 countries) ignoring our NATIONAL GAME (Hockey). Being the second largest in ‘Population’ after China but in terms of ‘Sports’ our ranking in ‘Olympic Game’ is “50” or sometimes beyond 50. Why? For last decades we are showing are worth in COMMONWEALTH GAMES and winning several GOLD/ SILVER/ BRONZE whereby our ranking is under TOP 10. The question is why it is not happening in Olympic Game. The obvious reasons are worth mentioning:

1.Our National game is HOCKEY but we focus more on CRICKET for last 30 years and unfortunately CRICKET is not included in Olympic Game due to which NOT a single GOLD under this category.

2. As we have lost the charm for HOCKEY also due to constant DEFEAT; so no GOLD under this category also.

3. Our Government of India initiative towards SPORTS is very DULL and sometimes NEGATIVE also towards FEMALE whom they do not believe that they (female) are capable enough to compete.

4. Absence of excellent COACH and MENTOR and if they are but unfortunately they are not from India; so they are not able to READ Indian minds.

5. No FUTURE in SPORTS due to absence of support from Government of India for Indian because after certain AGE when they are not in a position to play then how they will survive?

6. Our Government of India believes in “JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDER”. It means those who will be winner only they will get all AWARD & REWARD and other FACILITIES ever after RETIREMENT.

7. No SUPPORT from Government of India at schools or colleges for SPORTS whereby in China; Government of China is able to find out MERITORIOUS sports persons from schools and colleges and they are picking them even at the age of “6” onwards and giving them ADEQUATE training and all support before and after which is NOT at all happening in India due to this the FUTURE of sports in India is totally DARK. Above all

8. No SPONSORSHIP, FAVOURITISM and CORRUPTION hampering in selection of meritorious sports persons.

To conclude, Government of India is supposed to take care of all SPORTSPERSON like Before Sales, During Sales and After Sales only then you will be able to boost up MORALE of the sports person and they will play for country not for self keeping in mind their CAREER is safe and secure ever before & after either failure or success.

Topic – 7: Cricket vs.

Topic – 8: Cricket vs. Match Fixing?

The topic itself is very clear and asking whom should we blame for ‘Match Fixing’ in India – Cricketer or Bookies or Officers of BCCI? Firstly, let us understand one very common example – we eat goat meat, chicken, beef (cow meat) and pork (pig meat) for that purpose ‘BUTCHER’ is killing several thousands of goat, chicken, cow and pig on daily basis - whom you will blame: those who are eating or killing? Secondly, people go to ‘Prostitutes’ – whom you will blame: People or Prostitute? Thirdly, officers take bribe in the offices – whom you will blame: officers or people? The above mentioned cases telling you very frankly that Butcher, Prostitute and Officers are completely INNOCENT because you APPROACH them for your NEED, WANTS & DEMAND; so people are RESPONSIBLE. In the same way in case of Cricket vs. Match Fixing – Cricketer is accountable and responsible for this UNLAWFUL act despite that they are getting HUGE sum of money, Love & Affection by country people, Respect & Pride, several other award & reward by our President of India & Prime Minister of India and so on. To conclude, INTEREST OF THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE UPPERMOST IN ONE’S MIND; no excuses of life threatening by bookies or others (if you have any life threat by anyone just give a request to our PM of India, simply they will provide you Z Plus security as they are giving for their MP’s & MLA’s; after all you are also a NATIONAL level player – no one can touch you without your consent). Despite so much of love and affection, even if they are HUNGRY for money; once caught simply LIFE BANE for all SPORTS related activities – no advertisement, no endorsement, no invitation in auction, no invitation for umpiring, no invitation for commentary, no invitation for judging etc. in India which will be just like LIFE IMPRISONMENT.

Topic – 9: Education vs. Examination

This topic is very well debated since 40 years – whether education has killed examination or examination has killed education. Both are incorrect because the whole EDUCATION SYSTEM is FAULTY – How? I will explain this with the help of an example: long ago there was a person who had several pets with them. Among them most prominent were Monkeys, Crow, Elephant, Fish and Penguin. One day he decided to take an exam after his formal teaching & training. He called his all ‘Prominent’ pet and told them to climb upon a ‘Tree’. As natural, monkeys and crow (as a bird he can fly) immediately finished the task but others were failed, why? As a teacher or guru we must understand that everybody has certain skills, abilities and aptitude to perform. How you can MEASURE everyone by the same ‘Parameters’ – this is totally UNFAIR but we are doing this since civilizations developed due to this it has developed a big GAP between skilled and unskilled person etc. As a matter of fact we must have ‘Value Based Education’ backed by EXAMINATION not only at the end of the year rather it should be done on DAILY basis through careful observation and evaluation with the help of teachers or guru which should starts in schools and should be made COMPULSORY from 1st to 10th standard. The ‘Value Based Education’ teach us how to connect your CLASSROOM teaching with REAL LIFE situations so that since beginning we will be able to correct our students and there will be ‘Paradigm Shift’ in terms of Attitude, Perception, Etiquette, Values & Ethics, Decision Making & Problem Solving etc. In other words, we can say that our Value Based Education must focus on both SCHOLASTIC (theory and activities based on theories should be given only 15% value because with the help of Subject Knowledge - ‘Technical Skills’ you get only a ‘Job’) and CO-SCHOLASTIC (activities based on Soft Skills or Life Skills should be given 85% value because with the help of Soft Skills or Life Skills – ‘Management Skills’ you get a ‘Career’ through which you go up and enjoy all luxuries, comforts and lifestyles).

Topic – 10: IIM & IIT’s vs. Primary & Secondary Schools

This topic has gain momentum almost for last 10 years whereby debate is going on whether we should open MORE IIM & IIT’s or we should focus on by opening more PRIMARY & SECONDARY SCHOOLS i.e. finally focusing on EDUCATION. I will try to explain this topic with the help of advantages & disadvantages by IIM & IITs etc.

Advantages of IIM & IITs

1. Great CAREER in terms of SALARY package.

2. Foreign Tours at company’s cost.

3. Excellent luxuries, comforts and life styles etc.

Disadvantages of IIM & IITs

1. More IIM & IITs means more UNEMPLOYMENT for Non-IIM & IITs UG & PG.

2. More GAP in salary and other things between IIM & IITs & non-IIM & IITs

3. DOWRY market has increased almost 800% (before 2000 they were asking Rs.10 lacs but now they are asking Rs.80 lacs).

4. Not even 1% R&D contribution towards WORLD is from IIM & IITs.

5. Not even 1% Book Author contribution towards WORLD from IIM & IITs.

6. Not even a single NOBLE prize winner from India belongs to IIM & IIT’s.

7. Not even 1% TOP ENTREPRENEURS are from IIM & IITs.

8. Not even 1% TOP INTRAPRENEURS (almost after 10 to 15 years of services if

Someone is starting their own business) are from IIM & IIT’s.

As a matter of fact, government of India should focus on Primary and Secondary education (by opening more quality schools with WORLD CLASS knowledge, information and exposure for students, staff and faculty or teachers) MORE so that our FOUNDATION should be strong which in turn will automatically convert our contribution towards WORLD more than 10%.
