A Critical Analysis: An Introduction to Soft Skills/Life Skills/Social Skills/People Skills/World Skills
Soft Skills, Life Skills, Social Skills, People Skills and Above all World Skills are PART of as a 1st Step – Philosophy which leads to 2nd Step – Psychology which leads to 3rd Step - PD (Personality Development) because we are studying PD since 1923 and Soft Skills and other related skills came into existence only after 1950’s. As per Google and Wikipedia Search: Father of Organizational Communication and Soft Skills is Mr. Charles Redding who introduced Soft Skills in the industry long back in the year 1950 in USA and later on Soft Skills was used by USA Army in the year 1960 - 70).
In reality, we Indians are Mother and Father of almost 99% things which exist on this earth but due to lack of knowledge, information and exposure, it started transferring from one person to another person, one region to another region, one state to another state and finally one country to another country and as of now we have only 1% Mother and Father of certain things. As per Google and Wikipedia search, we do not have any mother and father related to Soft Skills/Life Skills/Social Skills/People Skills/World Skills/ Communication Skills etc. but at least we have Modern father of Psychology in India: Narendra Nath Sen Gupta along with Indian Scientist Dr. Gunamudian David Boaz. In 1916 he established the First independent department of psychology in India–the Department of Experimental Psychology, at the University of Calcutta, the second being in University of Madras by Dr.Gunamudian David Boaz.
Plato and Aristotle (disciple of Plato) were among the first philosophers who thought about the mind and body. In 1879, Wilhelm Wundt, a German scientist, considered as Father of Psychology who established the world’s first psychological lab at Leipzig, Germany. Sigmund Freud of Vienna, who is considered as the father of modern psychology or Personality psychoanalysis.
All over the World, students can be categorized in three parts: Rough Diamond, Polished Diamond and Shining Diamond (I was Rough Diamond in 1996 when I was in the First Year of my MBA/PGDM but in the 4th year I was Shining Diamond only because of my father effort who was himself MTECH from Calcutta University during 1955 – 60). Actually he used these words during 1996 – 1998: Soft Skills and Soft Communication i.e.: Tips, Tricks and Techniques of 100% SUCCESS). Since 1996, I started using all key words related to Soft Skills and Soft Communication among my friends in the MBA/PGDM institutes. That is Why, I consider myself as the Father of Soft Skills and Soft Communication in India. I was the first person who had introduced Soft Skills and Soft Communication in India long back in the year 1996 when I was doing my MBA and for the first time I taught Soft Skills and Soft Communication to MBA/PGDM students in the year 1998 in Mumbai.
In India, I changed the definition of Personality Development, Soft Skills, Soft Communication, Life Skills and Social Skills which is together known as People Skills and World Skills all over the World by learned philosophers and psychologists. As per my understanding,
What is Personality Development?
In reality, Personality Development is simply WOW factor if you meet and see someone in your surrounding and immediately you get impressed by him or her in a minutes which is consists of five factors or you can say that Personality as a whole is the sum total of these five factors:
1. Etiquette: For Example: General, Social and Business etc.
2. Manners: For Example: Sorry, Thank you, and Excuse me etc
3. Grooming: For Example: Dress Code vs. Uniform etc.
4. Body Language: For Example: your gesture & posture
5. Indianism: For Example: use of proper and decent accent, diction and pronunciation in Hindi & English etc.
In short, once you get mastery over all these five influencing factors, all of a sudden, there will be Paradigm Shift in one’s individual’s appearance, character, intelligence, attractiveness, efficiency and style.
What is Soft Skills?
Soft Skills is all about SMARTNESS which comes through
1. AWARENESS means Knowledge + Information + Exposure = Learning.
2. HUMBLENESS means IQ+EQ+RQ+HQ+SQ = Dynamic Living.
In short, we can easily say that Soft Skills is all about Learning and Dynamic Living which leads to Paradigm Shift in one’s individual’s thinking, beliefs, values and expectations.
(IQ = Intelligent Quotient; EQ = Emotional Quotient; RQ = Relationship Quotient; HQ = Humour Quotient and SQ = Spiritual Quotient)
What is Soft Communication?
In India, only 5% students are getting awesome CAREER which means Luxury, Lifestyles and Comfort. Rest 95% students are getting only JOB because their Soft Communication is ZERO. As per my understanding, Soft Communication is all about HEALING people which come through
1. Effective Reading
2. Effective Writing
3. Effective Listening
4. Effective Speaking
5. Effective Presentation
6. Effective Interpretation
In short, mastery over these six pillars helps an individual to gain self – image, self- confidence, high self esteem, positive attitude and positive perception towards life.
What is Life Skills and Social Skills?
It is all about being an accountable and responsible World citizen by growing, improving, developing and enhancing one’s personality, soft skills and soft communication in such a way so that an individual will be able to extend his or her family background, upbringing, social status, environmental factors, financial conditions, genetic factors, favourable situations and circumstances towards self, family, friends, relatives and others through coaching, mentoring, counselling and healing.
Why there is need of Soft Skills
This part we will explain you all by extending live or real life examples whereby NOT AT ALL any standard qualification or formal education is necessary.
Examples 1
1.You might have observed at your home someone always looking or searching for his or her Shirt, Trousers, Shocks, Handkerchief, Pen, Pencils, Specks, Helmet, Watch, shoes etc. just before leaving for school / colleges / office / or any other place. WHY?
2.It might possible that you are coming to your office or school or Railway station by your car or Bike and in the mid way you came to know that you are running short of “PETROL” and instantly it got stopped. WHY?
3. You promised your friend to come to the THEATRE by 12 P.M. tomorrow but you could not reach there because of certain work at home. WHY?
Explanation - 1
These three examples are clearly saying that you are NOT at all GOOD at ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS (OS). It means you are very poor in organizing the things at home that is why you always looking or searching for your belongings just before leaving for the school or colleges or offices. Secondly, if you do not know when to FILL your Car or Bike with Petrol or Diesel; again poor in organizing. Thirdly, if you are not able to reach somewhere after your promise; again you do not know how to prioritize the work.
Note - 2
If you are not good at organizing the things at your home then how you will be able to organize the things at your OFFICE. Here, you need to know, how to deal with OS.
Example 2
Suppose you passed out from IIM, Bangalore, and appeared for an interview at INTEL. It is lovely surprised for you that you saw your TWO friends from the same institute. Now as you know very well that all of you are having same Engineering Degree from IIT, Kanpur from the same batch and same specialization with 95% and again MBA from the same institute and same specialization with 85 % (it means technical knowledge level is same). But unfortunately there is only ONE post and two will be rejected at any cost. In reality it happened and C got selected but both A & B rejected. WHY?
Explanation - 2
In reality organization looks for not only your HARD SKILLS (i.e. your education, technical knowledge etc.) rather they concentrate more on “SOFT SKILLS”. In this modern and competitive world you must have all those “FIVE” soft skills mentioned above. If you have those five soft skills in you simply in other words you are able to perform “MULTIPLE” duties and responsibilities.
How to improve or develop Soft Skills
As we all know very well that “Learning” and “Development” is possible only by taking STEP-BY-STEP approach. Our step-by step approach is:
1. Firstly on the basis of your HARD SKILLS whatever you have achieved we will counsel you regarding how to grow and improve further?
2. Secondly we will take your PSYCHOMETRIC TEST and on the basis of this we will tell your PRESENT personality and SKILLS you have. And then we will train you how to be MASTER of those skills within a “MONTH” time or even within 15 days if your DEDICATION, DETERMINATION and DEVOTION is there.
3. Thirdly we start with always “Etiquette”. It means once you are good at MANNERS simply our effort will be less for the next class.
4. Fourthly we will go by “Presentation Skills” whereby we will remove your SHYNESS, HESITATION, STAGE FEAR, FRUSTRATION, and in turn will boost your ENERGY, CONFIDENCE, CLARITY, COMPLETENESS,
CONCISENESS etc.
5. Fifthly we will go by “Organizational Skills” so that you will be able to take your own DECISION and can solve your PROBLEM and can apply MANAGERIAL SKILLS.
6. Sixthly we will go by “Interpersonal Skills” and will learn how to deal with others and how to react in a certain situation if it demands.
7. Seventhly we will take into consideration our “Communication Skills” which is simply Life Blood of the business.
8. Lastly we will go by “Leadership Skills” without which we all are like an ANIMAL. Simply to say everybody works for himself or herself but leadership Teaches you that you should also TAKE CARE of others.
What is the difference between Hard Skills & Soft Skills?
Hard Skills are ‘Subject’ knowledge. But Soft Skills are ….. See answer above.
